Whenever headlines are dominated by conflict—such as the recent Iran escalations—investors reflexively ask where they should move their money to keep it safe. "Flight to safety" is a real phenomenon where institutional capital flows out of variable-risk equities and into predictable, store-of-value instruments.

The Enduring Appeal of Gold

Gold remains the undisputed king of safe havens. Unlike fiat currencies, which can be devalued by central banks, or equities, which depend on corporate performance, gold has intrinsic historical value. During Middle East crises, regional uncertainty drives sovereign wealth funds and central banks to increase their gold reserves, pushing prices higher.

US Treasuries and the Dollar

The US Dollar index typically strengthens during global conflicts. Why? Because global debt is dollar-denominated, and in times of panic, liquidity is king. US Treasury bonds offer a risk-free yield backed by the world's largest economy, making them an automatic destination for nervous capital.

Are Digital Assets Geopolitical Hedges?

The 2026 landscape forces us to look at Bitcoin. While originally pitched as "digital gold", its high correlation with the Nasdaq 100 often makes it trade like a high-beta tech stock rather than a safe haven. During the initial shock of the Iran conflict, digital assets saw heavy liquidations, underscoring that they are still treated as risk assets by institutional traders.
